L.T.K.R.F HITS WA FOR THE FIRST EVENT OF 09/10 TOUR

The first event of the VQS series for 2009/2010 was held in WA at Scarborough beach. On the morning of the contest when the sun started to rise and the fog lifted, we were greeted to a chest-high, skatepark of peaks.

A queue of competitors wrapped around both sides of the tent as we signed them up and got underway with one of the most fun-filled events I have been to. Here is a brief rundown of the day¹s events. Enjoy!

Cortney Brown’s surfboard sponsor Da Louie was giving away a brand new custom made surfboard to the best up-and-coming surfer on the day, which caused excitement among the crowd on the beach, and gave competitors another reason to really impress.

With all competitors chomping at the bit to get out there it was the gromms first up. These guys were tearing the bag out of the fun peaks that beautiful Perth had to offer.

Next up it was the juniors, followed by the opens, and after them the girls had their chance to show their talent to the Judges and huge crowd on the beach.

If you weren’t surfing your heat you were getting into one of the many beach activities that the boys from Volcom were making up for the hordes, hungry to get their hands on the hundreds of prizes that were given away.

One of the Globe beach competitions was to build a massive sand castle, the winner receiving a brand new pair of shoes and headphones from Globe. The winning structure was a huge turtle with a big Volcom Stone on its back.

The day was soon coming to an end and all 4 divisions were about to hit the water for their finals.

First up it was the Gromms; it was a very tightly contested final but taking out the winner’s trophy and also taking home the custom hand shaped Da Lewy Surfboard was Jacob Wilcox, who impressed Cortney Brown the most all day to receive the amazing prize. In second place was Sam Humphrey, running a close 3rd was Zac Hayes-Love and in 4th was James Flemming.

The Ladies finalists were ripping and taking top honours and a spot in the VQS Champs was Felicity Palmateer. Taking second place was Laura Macaulay, in 3rd was Yasmin Ismail and in 4th was Bronte Macaulay.

The Junior division was super tight with the leader changing with each wave
ridden. Mitchell O'Connor, Lachan Mazzucchelli, Jake Fawcett and Max Marsden
all taking the lead at one point in the final, but it was Max Marsden that
took the winners trophy, in a very close second was Jake Fawcett, in third
was Lachan Mazzucchelli and in forth was Mitchell O’Connor.

And last but not least, the main event. The Pro-Am division was packed once again with 36 competitors signing up. Breaking out of the pack and absolutely smashing the final was Luke Campbell who also picked up the “Electric Bolt thrower move of the day” cash prize, in second place was Jerome Forrest, with local ripper Darcey Maynard coming in third and in forth was Jarred McHave.

This being the first event of the season, all 4 finalists in each division will qualify for the VQS Aus Champs in April.

EVAN AT MORRISEYS NEW ZEALAND TAKES FIRST PRIZE IN THE VOLCOM BRAND JEANS WINDOW COMPETITION

Over 100 stores throughout Australia and New Zealand participated in the competition, all stores were shipped out a basic pack of Volcom Brand Jean point of sale and each had the chance to get creative using what Volcom supplied and introducing their own elements.

We received some creative window entrants, but it was Evan from Morrissey’s in a small country timber town on New Zealand’s North Island (13,000 population) that took first prize with his use of foil, a stone TV, Volcom brand jeans and a hell of a lot of pins and came up with a very creative Volcom brand jeans window.

Evan received a surprise visit from the Volcom NZ crew and the Marketing Manager to deliver the news. Evan had a real shock and could not believe Larry the storeowner had kept the news to himself until the Volcom crew arrived, well only from Evan as he had Evan’s parent’s present and local skaters as well as a team of supports all cheering when the news was delivered.

Was great to see the excitement in the store and a well deserving all expenses paid trip to Sydney to spend a day skating with Dustin Dolling and Chima Ferguson and a walk through the Volcom warehouse to collect $500 worth of Volcom product.

Evan was clearly stoked to have won the competition and spoke of sleepless nights thanks to his new born son who he later dedicated the win, “with out my son keeping me up at night and depriving me of sleep, I would not have been able to have come up with this idea, it is amazing where your mind can go when you don’t sleep he said”.
